So if phonics is “ a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with symbols in an alphabetic writing system” as stated in the Oxford English Dictionary, we should really ask: how do 26 letters correlate with 44 sounds? Don’t we have too many sounds, or more precisely, since oral language comes first, aren’t we short on letters?

Seemingly, the solution is simple. Create more letters! If we were designing a language from scratch or had absolute authority to fundamentally change all of written English, then that might be an option. Great thinkers have suggested logical revisions to the alphabet (e.g. the Shavian Alphabet). This question is as much political and philosophical as it is linguistic, so it’s safe to assume nothing is going to change between now and the time you start teaching your child to read![/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ module_id=”1-Dont-Throw-the-Baby-Out” _builder_version=”4.9.1″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”30px||0px||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”1 Don’t Throw the Baby Out” collapsed=”on”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.9.1″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” max_width=”1200px” width=”95%” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.1″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ custom_padding=”|10px||10px|false|false” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” header_text_color=”#f2735c” custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” locked=”off”]

#1 Don’t Throw the Baby Out

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://fromapixel.com/lcentralold/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LCentral-English-Enrichment-Tuition-Singapore-Blog-Going-Beyond-Dont-Throw-the-Baby-Out.png” title_text=”LCentral English Enrichment Tuition Singapore Blog Going Beyond Don’t Throw the Baby Out” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”30px||||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”30px||||false|false” locked=”off”]

Although the English alphabet is an imperfect system with a long history, it is still a genuine guide on how to read.
